Strategies to Help Toddlers Develop Good Manners

Understanding and practicing good manners is an important child development skill that little ones will carry with them throughout their life. This is why it is essential to help them develop these skills during their early years, which is when they absorb a significant amount of new information and develop new behaviors. According to Casel.org, studies of more than 1 million students demonstrate that social and emotional learning correlates to students’ positive academic achievements. You can do several things at home to help your toddler develop good manners.

1. Lead by Example

Children learn a lot by observing the behavior of the adults around them. As a parent or guardian, you are your child’s first role model. Demonstrate good manners in your daily interactions, whether you’re at home, in public, or interacting with others. Use polite language, such as “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me,” and show respect to everyone you encounter. When children see these behaviors consistently, they are more likely to emulate them.

2. Use Play Experiences to Help Them Practice

Create different play scenarios where they need to use polite behavior, such as greeting someone, asking for something, or apologizing. For example, pretend to be a guest at a dinner party and practice how to offer food, make conversation, and say thank you. This interactive approach helps children understand the context in which good manners are used and gives them a chance to practice in a safe environment.

3. Reinforce Positive Behavior

Positive reinforcement can go a long way in encouraging good manners. When your little one displays polite behavior, acknowledge and praise them for it. Be specific about what they did well, such as saying, “I really liked how you said ‘please’ when you asked for the toy,” or “Thank you for holding the door open for your friend.” This positive feedback reinforces behavior and motivates your toddler to continue practicing good manners.

4. Use Books and Media

Children’s books, TV shows, and movies often include stories and characters that demonstrate good manners. Choose media that highlights polite behavior and discuss it with your little one. Ask questions like, “What did you think about how the character said ‘thank you’?” or “How did it make you feel when the character shared their toys?” This helps children see the importance of good manners in different contexts and encourages them to think about their own behavior.
